The Rumford Club - 70th Anniversary Legacy

The Rumford Club

The Rumford Club, a private dinner debate club for the building services and built environment, was formed in 1947 to address technical topics around air movement such as air conditioning. Since then it has broadened its view of potential subjects within the building engineering services sector.

The club was named after Count Rumford, born Benjamin Thompson in America in 1753. He went on to become a fellow of the Royal Society and achieved popular acclaim for his designs for domestic fireplaces.

2017 is the clubs 70th Anniversary. To celebrate, the club has started the Rumford Legacy Initiative.

At its annual AGM in November 2016, The Club voted to sponsor a school under the Class of Your Own (COYO) initiative set up by Alison Watson at Design Engineer Construct®. http://designengineerconstruct.com/

Rumford CrestThis scheme by Design Engineer Construct®, approved and accredited for schools in England, Wales and Scotland by the Department for Education (DfE), aims to provide knowledge and GCSE level qualifications specifically for the built environment. These qualifications can be taken on to college and university.

The club pledged £4,000, towards the £12,000 required for the scheme. Obtaining the remaining £8,000 from its members and associated organisations. We, 2EA®, have donated £500 towards the scheme.

Through our past articles, and reports that are floating around in the industry, we have identified that there is a huge skills gap within the industry - and it will only get bigger. Therefore this COYO scheme is what’s neededalongside apprenticeships, to start filling this gap.

The Rumford Club has successfully, in less than 2 months, secured the remaining £8,000 required and has found a school, Norbury Manor Business & Enterprise College for girls, to launch this successful COYO scheme with.
